Mauritius Grand Bassin

Considered
by many devotees to be an extension of the sacred Ganges River in
India. This natural lake resting on a volcanic crater
is a place of worship for the Hindus in Mauritius. |

Also
known as the Ganga Talao, the lake becomes alive
especially during the months of February and March, when
the Hindus celebrate the Maha Shivaratree, in great pomp. The
calm water beautifully reflects the colorful temples and
offerings (flowers, bananas, incense) to the miniature representations
of Shiva and Ganesh surrounding the lake. |
